the path to greatness

I am blessed and cursed. Blessed because from an early age, I have always known what I want for my future. There's always ever been one career for me to pursue, and that's to be a journalist. I didn't need pressure or persuasion from my parents or any advice from high school counselors. It's just always been my goal. I'm cursed because now, at the age that I am, I'm faced with the daunting task of making it all happen. I can't use "not sure" as an excuse to waste time figuring myself out. I've always been sure. There's just one little problem, wanting something isn't really enough. Forget about the cheesy lines about chasing your dreams and achieving anything if you "put your mind to it." I'm playing with the big boys now, and those fairy tale motivational posters lay taped onto my dusty high school classroom walls. From here on out, the only currency they accept is a little bit of luck and a lot cold, hard, focus.

I've learned something about myself, and I'm sure this is some generic message that can be found at the end of some chick flick somewhere, but I'm going to write it out anyways. I really am the kind of person that can't live in the moment, I'm far too reminiscent and I'm always missing the way things used to be. It's funny, because if I'm always thinking about how great things used to be and never happy with the way things are, how did I even embed the memories I look back on as good? For me, I think there's something comforting in the past, even if it wasn't all golden, it's safe. The past is over, we know how it ends, just not how it continue. We all know how selective our memories can be. It's like rewatching a movie just for your favorite parts, or re-reading the best chapter of a book.

Even when I can't specifically identify what I feel like "lacking" in my life now, I just continuously place comparisons with how good it was before. It's actually a recent shift in my personality. It used to be I couldn't wait for things to change, now it's like I wish so much for things to go back to how the were. Of course I don't actually mean that. I think that it's just been a really long stale patch of having nothing to look forward to.

On another note, I've realized I don't like blogging, or rather don't see the point in it. Maybe I'm just a really bad blogger, but I don't really find anything satisfying about rambling mindless nothings to a faceless audience. I think it's just because this blog is too random. I've recently taken on a project for HY.GEN.IC, and that's something I really get excited to write about. It's real subjects, real drive, and real purpose. On second thought, maybe I don't just think about the past all the time. Because I think I spend just as much time daydreaming about my future as I do being wistful about the past. Who knows. I'm just one big ball of tangled thoughts lately, and trying to spout something philosophical just for the sake of a blog entry is ceeertainly not something I'm going to try again anytime soon.

my debute as an MC

last week and the week before, i had my debute as an MC speaker (don't get too excited, it wasn't MTV it was just for the taiwan scholarship students.

it was still very exciting for me, i bought my first two blazers and i felt very professional. the first ceremony i had to speak in front of 800 people! that's the first time i can recall ever having such a large audience.


in other news, halloween is coming up and i'm going to make a peacock costume. pictures up soooon

so i've realized the only time i ever "blog" is when i'm in one of my bouts of depression and apathy. (okay, so i get like that a lot.) but i'm reviewing my blog and it makes me sound like an emo loner you'll find chain smoking cigarettes at a caffe for hours. that's not me at all. so, yes, i'm unmistakably back into one of my bouts of depression (the seasons are changing and so am i?) because this month the karma police are out for me. i've lost my phone, ID, income, and my apartment is flooded with mosquitos everytime i open the door (wtFUCK?) let's not mention the slow taxi drivers, the stubbed toes and the bumped elbows (oh wait i just did)

okay anyways so there's my whiny bit. I should just delete it. Ah, whatever i'll just leave it and come back in a few months and get annoyed at what i wrote (so it goes...)

here's an update on my life:
it's october. school's definitely coming along, i've kind of gotten a hang of it? the classes in chinese are still SO hard but i like my classmates, i like the material. it's still hard for me to motivate myself into going to class but, what can you do.

it's really hard not to miss home lately. especially when it seems like there's not a lot going on for me here. i'm trying my best to be positive though, trying even harder to make my life exciting and interesting.

here's a few pictures from a fashion show i went to the other day. the designer is taiwanese, name: Donocratico. I loved his entire line, it made me hungry for another fashion show. the blaring music, the bright lights, the beautifully dressed people sitting on my left and right and the cameras! so glam, i can't wait to be a journalist and chase down the stories everyone is curious about.



every piece looked comfortable, modern, bohemian and simply chic. wish my wallet was fat enough...

my cooking diary

i'm not going to turn this into a food blog, but lately i've been motivated to trying to cook new dishes, i'm not a very creative cook, so i use gojee.com for inspiration (check it out, it's great-you can tell the site the ingredients you have in your kitchen, the things you are craving to eat and the the stuff you absolutely can't stand

tonight i made cous cous with cauliflower, tomato, garlic, mushrooms and parm cheese! delicious

yesterday, i was audacious and tried making a miso-ginger glazed salmon burger on ciabatta bread. the result wasn't entirely what i was hoping for, but it was a pretty good first attempt!
